Industrial clerk - Training

Key points of the industrial clerk apprenticeship

  • Duration of training: 3 years + possibility of shortening the training period
  • Commercial area - work preparation to logistics
  • Knowledge of English
  • Communicative, responsible
  • Analytical way of thinking
The training consists of a theoretical and a practical part, which is why they are also called dual training. You learn the theoretical basics at vocational school and the practical skills in the company.

The duration of training is 3 years and can be shortened with appropriate qualifications. This can be agreed before the start of the training or submitted during the course of the training through appropriate performance.

Industrial clerks work in the commercial area of a company and get to know all departments during their training.

In materials management, they compare offers, negotiate with suppliers and supervise the receipt of goods. In production planning, they control and monitor the production of goods and prepare the corresponding order documents. In logistics, they learn how to handle national and international consignments of goods, taking into account the legal requirements. Sales tasks also include working out calculations and prices and negotiating sales with customers.

In addition, strategies are developed in the marketing department to optimally promote the products on the market. This includes analysing the market and competitors, as well as optimising product texts. In the financial accounting department, all business transactions are processed, booked and controlled. In the area of human resources, you will gain insight into the selection and planning of personnel.

Since an industrial clerk goes through and gets to know all areas, he/she turns out to be a true "all-rounder".

  • Skills that are useful for the job
    • Strong communication skills
    • Organisational skills
    • Analytical way of thinking
    • Inquisitive
    • Responsible
Don't be afraid to apply for the apprenticeship if your skills are not yet strong in some of these areas. Most people feel the same way and you can't do everything from the start. There are many ways to improve or learn your skills on the job. Below we explain how these skills can help you in your apprenticeship or where they can be developed.

Communication skills

Communication is crucial when dealing with people. You have to be able to relate to many different types of people, whether you are advising customers, negotiating with suppliers or working with colleagues.

It is important to listen actively, have an open manner and be able to express yourself, both orally and in writing. Ideally, you should also be able to do this in another language, which is especially helpful in internationally active companies.

Organisational talent

An organisational talent is characterised above all by a structured and organised way of working. You should be able to plan processes and manage yourself. It is important to set priorities and to be able to switch between different tasks in order to ensure that everything runs smoothly. In addition, it is helpful if you can remember things well and work in a concentrated manner, as there can also be disruptive factors in an office, such as a ringing telephone.

Analytical mindset

A company has different types of processes. In order to understand the effects of these processes, it is helpful to have the ability to analyse situations and facts. You can then draw conclusions and possibly even think of optimisation approaches. This ability is beneficial in all departments of a business management company.

Inquisitive

The digital world in particular is constantly changing. In your apprenticeship, you will work with modern applications for PC work and communication. Therefore, you should have a certain willingness to learn and be open to new things. Through further development, your knowledge will always be up to date and keep up with the times.

Responsible

Your decisions always have an impact on the company and its success. You should be aware of this responsibility. In the course of your apprenticeship you will grow with your tasks, so that in the end you will be ready to take on this responsibility.
