What differences you should look out for when buying a safe
Depending on the valuables you want to protect, different sizes and security levels are suitable, which also affects the price of a safe. At BURG WÄCHTER, your investment for entry-level safe security is between £200 and £300.
A model for commercial use with a higher resistance grade or additional fire protection is available from around £1,700.
You can recognise a high-quality safe by the following features:
- Certification according to EN 14450
- (usually for private households) or EN 1143-1 (commercial)
- High-quality material: robust safe doors and walls made of
- steel, in many cases fireproof
- Modern locking systems,
- mechanical or with electronic code lock and fingerprint
- Option for permanent
- anchoring in wall and/or floor
- Test seals and awards for
- tested quality
Our tip: Don't cut corners. Without certifications and an adequate security level, a thief can break into the safe more easily. And the safe offers no protection against theft or fire. Important to know: This is why insurance companies often only recognise certified safes.
You should be aware of these security levels before you buy your safe
Safes have security levels, including those in accordance with standards EN 14450 and EN 1143-1, which classify burglary protection:
- EN 14450: suitable for private use, with security levels S1 and S2, sufficient for valuables and documents in the home
- EN 1143-1: for higher protection and commercial use, with resistance grades N (0) to V (5)
Only very few models are still classified according to an outdated German standard, VDMA 24992, with security levels A and B.
Did you know? The police recommend a safe with resistance grade N (0) in accordance with EN 1143-1 even for domestic use. And as a general rule, always check for the test sticker and certification in accordance with EU standards.
The most important certificates for buying a safe
Very important: only buy certified safes! Every safe from BURG-WÄCHTER is certified. We transparently state the maximum insured value of your valuables stored in the safe. This is because an important factor when buying a safe is the appropriate resistance grade. As a general rule, the higher the level, the more resistant the model is to break-in attempts and the greater the possible insurance cover. The insurable sum is directly related to the security level.
Tip: Do not choose a resistance level that is too low. This will ensure that higher values are also insured in the future. In addition, you should check with your household insurance company for the exact conditions before purchasing a safe.
Certifications at a glance
ECB-S
Many BURG-WÄCHTER safes meet the requirements of European standards EN 1143-1 and/or EN 1047-1. This is confirmed in the ECB-S certificates issued by the European Certification Board – Security Systems (certification body in accordance with EN 45011) for the safe model. ECB-S certification involves unannounced production inspections several times a year. This ensures consistently high quality.
VdS
The VdS tests and certifies security-related products. BURG-WÄCHTER's SecuSafe (mechanical lock) and SecuTronic (electronic lock) safe locks achieve high resistance values in the tested lock classes.

BURG-WÄCHTER tested
This label indicates that the product has been thoroughly tested in the BURG WÄCHTER testing laboratory. This means that even with inexpensive safes, you can be sure of receiving reliable brand quality.
Legal requirements when purchasing a safe
Do you want to store medicines, pharmaceuticals or weapons securely? The law stipulates the requirements that a security cabinet must meet:
- Weapon storage: The law requires a weapon cabinet to have at least resistance grade N (0) or I in accordance with EN 1143-1 (Weapons Act § 36). From resistance grade 0 onwards, you may store weapons and ammunition together in one cabinet.
- Storage of narcotics: Medical practices and nursing homes require a safe with at least resistance grade N (0). Public pharmacies must comply with a higher security level with resistance grade I.
But that's not all. Anchoring the safe provides additional protection against theft of the entire cabinet and its contents. The rule here is: if the safe weighs less than 1,000 kg, it must be firmly anchored. This ensures that certification and insurance cover are maintained.

FAQ
A safe with a high security rating, certified according to EN 1143-1 and with resistance grade N (0) or I.
A ‘good’ certified safe is usually available from €200 to €300 as an entry-level model. Safes with a higher resistance grade
require a higher investment, usually from €1,000.
You should consider purchasing a safe if you own or store any of the following items: valuables of high value (including sentimental value), confidential data and documents, substances that fall under the Narcotics Act, or weapons.
The higher the security level or resistance grade, the stronger the material, the more securely anchored – the safer. But one thing is clear: with a safe, you will feel safer than without one.
